About O’Neill
Back in1952, Jack O’Neill opened the first Surf Shop in a garage. He shaped balsa surfboards and sold accessories like paraffin wax and vests he started gluing together from neoprene. When the vests started selling, Jack decided to go into the wetsuit business, and the Surf Shop became a local gathering place. Soon surfers were riding more waves, and riding them better, in large measure because they could enjoy longer sessions in cold water in their new neoprene suits.

Surfers’ territories expanded — Northern California became a year-round surf zone, and people were surfing New Hampshire and Rhode Island in January. Explorations and transplants to surf culture opened up Oregon, Washington, and Canada. O’Neill eventually relocated to a large manufacturing facility, and his surf shop has morphed into an international company, leading the world’s wetsuit market and innovating beach lifestyle sportswear in the US, Japan, and Europe.

POLYESTER rashguard – will not stretch as much as nylon/spandex | Sizing is accurate (“SKINS” are meant to fit SKIN TIGHT)
**2017 UPDATE** STILL A GREAT RASHGUARD!!!Review below is for the SOLID COLOR with O’NEILL LOGO ACROSS FRONT made of POLYESTER/ELASTANE material.————————-INSIDE COLLAR READS:87% POLYESTER13% ELASTANEHAND WASH / DRIP DRYMADE IN MEXICOI have been wearing O’Neill rash guards for over 20 years and this rash guard is awesome! I am an educator and have been a certified water safety instructor for two decades. The following has been my experience with the “Women’s Basic Skins Long Sleeve Crew” for over 10 years, so far.I have several of these POLYESTER rash guards in different colors. In over twenty years of wearing different brands and styles of rash guards, I find the SIZING of this rash guard to be ACCURATE – this style of rash guard is intended to fit skin tight (hence the name “SKINS”).The POLYESTER/ELASTANE material this particular rash guard is made of DOES NOT STRETCH AS MUCH as the nylon/spandex material some rash guards are made of. BUT, this polyester rash guard / skin has lasted longer and does very well with daily saline and chlorine exposure from public and residential swimming pools. So, I go with slightly less stretch & overall comfort in exchange for durability. If you are concerned about the sizing, the picture shows exactly how the rash guard is intended to fit – like a second skin. Generally, rash guards are sized to fit tight so the material will not bunch-up, ride-up, or slip/slide around during water sports or when worn under a wetsuit. If you prefer a looser fit, consider sizing up. If you are considered overweight (BMI/Body Mass Index over 25 as opined by a doctor or other qualified professional), maybe consider a “rash tee” or “swim shirt” instead.**2011 UPDATE** After about a month of almost daily use in saline and chlorinated residential swimming pools the stitching has faded slightly and the lettering on the front is cracking slightly. Color of the rash guard / skin (the polyester material) has stayed the same.**2012 UPDATE**The quality & sizing was the same as above during Summer 2012. Added opinion about this rash guard below.**2012 UPDATE**The quality & sizing was the same as above during Summer 2012. Added opinion about this rash guard below.RE: HEAT RETENTION & BUOYANCYMy experience when wearing this rash guard has been the following:- I feel the temperature of the water I am in- I feel the ambient temperature WHEN THIS RASH GUARD IS WET and I am OUT OF THE WATER- I feel a chill if there is a breeze WHEN THIS RASH GUARD IS WET and I am OUT OF THE WATERWhen swimming while wearing this rash guard, my experience has been the following:- I DO NOT experience unnatural or added buoyancy – I DO NOT float more in water – when wearing this rash guard.See Amazon’s description for this rash guard for information on what it offers. Generally, RASH GUARDS ARE NOT INTENDED TO HELP RETAIN BODY HEAT in water and generally WILL NOT CAUSE UNNATURAL/ADDED BUOYANCY. Generally speaking, a garment that is intended to help retain body heat in water sports is usually made out of a material called neoprene or made with some neoprene. I have wetsuits that are made of neoprene and those DO cause me to become more buoyant when in water. This is due to the porous nature of the neoprene material that has tiny air pockets within the material. The tiny air pockets in neoprene help retain body heat when a garment has a skin tight fit. The air pockets in neoprene material can also cause some unnatural/added buoyancy depending on the thickness of the neoprene. However, THIS RASH GUARD IS NOT MADE OF NEOPRENE. Put simply, wearing this rash guard in water is the equivalent of wearing a skin tight polyester shirt (of course, with 13% elastane for “four-way stretch” and “flatloc stitching” to avoid chafing). To my knowledge, there are no air pockets in polyester material that can help with heat retention or cause buoyancy. I do not get, or even expect, heat retention in water and I do not get/expect unnatural/added buoyancy while wearing this rash guard in water.RE: CHAFINGSo far, in over four years of regular use of this brand and particular style of rash guard, I have not experienced chafing of any kind. This rash guard is “flatloc stitched” to help avoid chafing and that works fine for me.RE: ADDED DRAG (a.k.a FRICTION DRAG in aquatics)I experience some friction drag in water, which is to be expected while wearing a long sleeved polyester shirt while swimming.RE: TAKING-OFF THE RASH GUARD WHEN IT IS WETI sometimes find the rash guard challenging to take off when it is wet, but that is to be expected when taking off any wet garment that has a skin tight fit.2013 UPDATE:FYI:* TWO-TONE (two colors) with O’NEILL LOGO on LEFT are NYLON/ELASTANE* (occasionally appear for sale on this page)I saw the new two-toned rash guards at an O’Neill store on Feb. 17, 2013 and looked at the label.* SOLID COLOR with O’NEILL LOGO ACROSS FRONT are POLYESTER/ELASTANE* (the ones always for sale on this page)2017 UPDATE:Now 87% polyester & 13% elastane (89% polyester & 11% elastane previously). Slightly less polyester & a tad more elastane in the material made a big difference in comfort IMHO. Still one of my go-to rashguards that withstands the harshness of chlorine & saline pool water, ocean water & UV rays for longer than nylon/spandex rashguards.Best wishes to all on finding what you’re looking for.

Long sleeves are a MUST for surfing newbies! This rash guard is perfect!
My husband and I took surf lessons in Cancun a few years ago and I bought a rash guard of a different name brand with half sleeves (just above the elbow). The whole time I found myself wishing I had bought a long sleeved one instead. When you’re paddling, the place where your arm meets the board is where a majority of the friction occurs and with the salt water is got to be torture after an hour or so. If you are searching for a rash guard for the purposes of surfing, I cannot recommend buying long sleeves enough!! My husband and I are going surfing again in Hawaii next month and I didn’t want a repeat of Mexico so I bought this. First I was very pleased to find that the medium actually fit me really well! In the other name brand I had to send back two and size WAY up before I got one that fit, and even then it was pretty tight. I am small chested with a long torso, broad shoulders, hourglass waist and disproportionately large hips. I normally wear size medium in tops so I was very pleased to find that this was true to size and extremely comfortable! It’s also long enough in the arms and torso which is something I struggle with in tops in general. The quality is very good and it looks cool on. I used it last weekend while white water rafting the snake river and it was perfect! It dries very fast and isn’t too hot even though it’s black and long sleeved and I find this one doesn’t roll up at the bottom on me like my other one did. I highly recommend for outdoor adventure women!

GREAT sun protection and super cute, too!
I purchased this shirt soley for sun coverage. I am a teacher with two kids so during the summer it is up to me to cover myself with sunscreen and that can get tricky and annoying. This shirt has made that whole process so much easier since I don’t need to apply sunscreen to my back anymore. I am a size small but like my tops to be a little bigger and longer so I usually get a medium. I got a medium for this sun shirt, as well. The fit is good. It fits snug around my arms, which I wanted for ease of swimming. The trunk of the shirt is a little baggy but not bad – it is not skin tight – at least not on me. The length of the sleeves is perfect, comes right up to my wrists and I can even pull it so it goes a little longer. The length of the trunk is good, as well, and it doesn’t ride up. I have compliments every time I wear it and it is great to not have to worry about sunscreen on the areas that the shirt covers. I live in AZ and wore this on a 115 degree day at the water park and I didn’t die of heat exhaustion. I did want to get wet right away to cool down, though. It dries pretty quickly and actually keeps you a little cooler as compared to just wearing a bathing suit alone. LOVE this shirt – it is worth every penny.

    Fits as expected, but…
I’ll just start by saying that there is nothing wrong with this rashguard at all, I just didn’t love how tight it was. Yes, it’s supposed to be tight… but this was uncomfortable, I cant imagine being active in this thing. So, I ordered a medium. I’m 5’6″, 140lbs, athletic-ish build so, I have a big ol ribcage and (in my opinion) broad shoulders. I’m also a 34D which doesn’t help my big cage or broad shoulders. Anywho, after reading the reviews, I figured I would give it a shot. I’m not disappointed at all, the material is nice, and its SPF 50 (bonus). Now, here is what I did. I also purchased the men’s version of this in a small, and I am so thankful that I did so I have something to compare this to. As you can see from the photos, the women’s version is smaller, but not by much. The waist is about the same, but the chest is slightly larger, the arms are longer, the torso is longer, AND it has a small collar that comes up a little. I LOVE ALL OF THOSE THINGS! For someone like me that wants a tight fight, but doesn’t want to sacrifice comfort… this is the route to go.So, in summary… if you’re worried about torso length, arm length, or it you have a little bit of larger chest/ribcage… do what I did and go buy the men’s version.

I’m a 10 and the large size fitted me perfectly. Fabric seems to be good quality and I love the colour.

I went up one size and the fit was perfect. It needs to fit tight, but was still comfortable.

I was looking for a rash guard to snorkel in for a trip to Australia. All the reviews are correct about the sizing. I should have listened. I am 4’10” and 90 lbs. I originally ordered an XS. OMG, it was sooooo tight. Based on how tight it was, I decided to go 2 sizes up. I returned the XS and ordered a M. I am very happy with the Medium. It just skims the body nicely without looking super tight. A size S probably would have fitted more like a swimsuit. I think I will get more use out of this Medium as it looks like a nicely fitted athletic shirt for walking around in the sun. I love the colour and the material.
